Questions
Roller garage door questions, answered
How much does a roller garage door cost?
The price depends on the width of the opening, the lath type and whether the door is manual or electric. For an opening up to 2.4 m wide, a manual single-skin door is £895–£1,295 inc VAT, an electric single-skin door is £1,195–£1,745 inc VAT and an insulated electric door is £1,495–£2,295 inc VAT. Each price includes supply, fitting, VAT and removal and disposal of an old roller or up-and-over door. Our prices page lists every size band.
What is included in your door prices?
Our door prices include supplying and fitting the new roller door, removing and disposing of an old roller or up-and-over door, and VAT. Electric doors are commissioned when they're fitted, with the paperwork handed over to you. Extras such as a colour, vision laths, smart control or a new fused spur are added separately, and anything not in our price table is priced on survey and shown in your written quote.
Should I choose insulated or single-skin laths?
Choose insulated laths if the garage is attached to the house, has rooms above it or is used as a workshop or gym, and single-skin laths if it's mainly for parking or storage. Insulated laths are double-skinned aluminium filled with polyurethane foam and reduce heat loss, draughts and noise. Single-skin laths are lighter and cheaper but offer little insulation. Neither makes the door part of the house's insulated envelope.
Is a roller door better than an up-and-over or sectional door?
A roller door is often the better fit where ceiling space or drive space is limited. Its curtain coils into a box at the top of the opening, so it needs no ceiling tracks, unlike a sectional door, and it doesn't swing out over the drive, unlike an up-and-over door. It does need headroom above the opening for the box and side room for the guide rails, which we measure at the survey.
What happens at a survey for a new roller garage door?
At the survey we measure the width and height of the opening, the headroom above it for the box and the side room for the guide rails, typically around 75 to 100 mm each side. We also check the lintel, the power supply, the floor level across the opening and access for fitting. The survey is free for new doors, replacements and conversions, and you'll receive a written quote afterwards.
How do I measure my garage for a roller door?
Measure the width of the opening between the brickwork at the top, middle and bottom, and the height at the left, middle and right, noting the smallest figures. Then measure the headroom from the underside of the lintel to the ceiling, and the side room either side inside the garage. Your measurements give a useful guide price, but we always measure properly at the survey before anything is ordered.
How do I open an electric roller door in a power cut?
Use the manual override. Most electric roller doors have an internal crank or winding handle that lets you open and close the door by hand, so keep it somewhere you can find it. If the garage is your only way in, an external override can be fitted on some doors. A battery backup unit (£149–£279 inc VAT, on a new or existing door) runs the door for a limited number of cycles.
What safety features does an electric roller door have?
An electric roller door has safety devices that stop or reverse the door if it meets an obstruction. These are a pressure-sensitive safety edge on the bottom rail, photocells across the opening, or both. The control system also limits the force the door can apply when closing. We commission every powered door we fit, including force testing to BS EN 12453, and hand over the paperwork.
